The solo work is underway!
In a very strange and difficult time, Panta Rei Dance Theater has focused on looking ahead and finding good solutions to maintain our activity – and now the solo work for the talents is underway!
The talent Edith Strand Askeland in TILT Grow and her mentor and choreographer Cecilie Lindeman Steen are in the process of their solo work and have told us a little about the process, the program and how we can see the positive in the time we are in.
Cecilie and Edith have so far in the process had to work together in alternative ways. Both see positive aspects of the process and how it can help shape the development of the solo.
Edith says: “This corona situation has in many ways created several frameworks for creative thinking. Through such strict restrictions, one can seek out people where they are and give them artistic moments in their own surroundings. Something that can open new doors for people to art. I think this situation can frame the work in new ways, since the stage space can have great variations. "
Cecilie says that one of the positive things in the situation is that we have had to slow down and that this in turn provides an opportunity for immersion in other things that have value. It is still uncertain what will be possible in the dissemination of the solos this autumn, which means that you have to think new and flexible:
“Panta Rei has talked about that our goal is to get communication” live ". Then the challenge is to create both closeness to people and at the same time keep your distance. This challenge means that you have to think new and creative in relation to space and place – and that is positive. These are the things Edith and I will be thinking about in the future. "
Cecilie has previously been a mentor in TILT Grow, while this year she is both a choreographer and a mentor. During her time at TILT Grow, she has made up her mind about the program she shares with us:
«TILT Grow is a very well-managed and complex program that gives the talents a fantastic dynamic between facilitation, challenges and being given responsibility for their own development and opportunities. This is especially evident through how Panta Rei Danseteater and TILT Grow focus on the need to see the artistic work, the context and the communication in context. By collaborating with a county every year, this year Viken, where the talents are given responsibility for developing their artistic work in dialogue and in the context of a specific place, Panta Rei gives the talents unique tools, insight and competence to be able to further develop their own artistic work. . »
Edith is last year’s student at the Oslo Academy of the Arts and the rehearsals for the solo work will therefore not start until the end of June. Still, Edith and Cecilie are well on their way to planning and getting to know each other.
Edith says: “I’m really looking forward to continuing working on this solo. One of the reasons for this is that it is the first choreographic process ever where I have had the opportunity to get to know the choreographer so well before we start working in the studio. Having an established and secure communication before the creative process starts I think can be a good starting point. At the same time, the link to Lørenskog, where I come from, is a big part of this whole process. This makes both the artwork and the whole project very special to me. "
In addition to the artistic work with the solo, the talents in TILT Grow are also project managers during the broad project TILT and Cecilie sums up; "So far, Edith and I have spent two to three web meetings getting to know each other – and I’m really looking forward to working with her. She has such a nice presence in what she does, a strong focus and “pressure” from within in an exciting way. And she is so motivated, hungry, curious and open to challenges and what is new.
I want our process to be a collaboration first and foremost. Among other things, we have talked about how it would have been nice if the solo could have flexibility for different formats and how Lørenskog as a place, and where Edith’s broad project will take place, can be incorporated into the process. The first Friday after Edith’s exam, we are going on an excursion to Lørenskog."
